Airlines know that some people will not show up for their flight. So they will sell more seats that the plane has. If to many people show up they have to get some people to give up their seats. This gives you power to negotiate with the airlines for vouchers, upgrades or even free tickets. Works best for people with lots of time and a shortage of money. There are some tricks to improve your chances of getting bumped.

FLY EARLY IN THE DAY - Flights are often full in the mornings  and gives you a better chance of getting on a later flight the same day. You might get good pay for giving up your seat and only be delayed a few hours.

ARRIVE EARLY - Ask the attendant if the flight is full. Volunteer to give up your flight for some remuneration if the flight is overbooked. This don't commit you but might put you first in line if other people volunteer to. The airline may not offer enough for you to bother. But the benefit might go up if there are few people volunteering. Eventually the airline will ask for volunteers. They will probably start by offering a $150 travel voucher. The price could go up and you can always ask for something extra if they start looking desperate.

POPULAR DESTINATIONS A GOOD BET - Vegas, Hawaii and hub cities like New York and Chicago are often full. Hub cities often are often full of business travelers in the morning. This has the added benefit of fewer people competing to get bumped because the guys in suits on company paid flights wont be giving up their flight.

TRAVEL LIGHT - If you can get by with carry on only then great. Airlines might like flexible people traveling lightly and since you are switching flights you are giving the airline another chance to lose your baggage.

YOU CAN ALWAYS ASK FOR MORE - You are inconvenienced and might be in the airport all day. So maybe you can swing the day in the airport lounge or get free WiFi. it doesn't hurt to ask when you negotiate. Free day in the lounge should be doable.
